Gentle Speller

Conservative spelling correction for desktop Obsidian using Yandex Speller. Supports Russian, English and Ukrainian, including mixed-language notes. No Python, local model, API key or build step is required.

Install

Until this plugin is accepted into the community directory, download main.js and manifest.json from a GitHub release into <vault>/.obsidian/plugins/gentle-speller/. Enable Gentle Speller in Settings → Community plugins.

Use

1. Open the plugin settings and explicitly allow sending text to Yandex.
2. Select the languages to check. Mixed mode checks multiple dictionaries; it is not language detection or translation.
3. Run Check current note / Проверить текущую заметку from the command palette. The default shortcut is Ctrl+Alt+P (Cmd+Alt+P on macOS); change it under Settings → Hotkeys.
4. Optionally enable automatic correction. The delay after the last edit defaults to 45 seconds and can be set between 10 and 3600 seconds. Each edit restarts the timer. Automatic correction is disabled by default.

The settings currently use Russian labels. Manual checking works with automatic checking disabled. Disable any other automatic corrector operating on the same note.

Privacy and network access

This plugin sends eligible note text to Yandex Speller at https://speller.yandex.net/services/spellservice.json/checkText using HTTPS POST. No requests are made until you enable the permission setting. Your IP address and submitted text are visible to the service. Do not enable this for text you cannot share with Yandex. See Yandex privacy policy and service terms.

The first check in a session submits all eligible lines in the edited note. Later automatic checks skip unchanged lines using an in-memory hash cache; manual checks submit eligible lines again. File names, vault paths and API keys are not included in requests. There is no plugin telemetry. This does not promise that the external service does not retain data.

Before an edit, the original note is saved to .obsidian/plugins/gentle-speller/backups/ within the vault. These copies contain note text, persist until manually deleted, and may be included by your backup/sync tools. Backups are not sent to the spelling service.

Limits and safety

• Spelling only: punctuation, grammar, agreement and style are not corrected.
• Applies only one unambiguous suggestion with a small change to a lower-case word. Short words and capitalized names are skipped. Some real mistakes will remain.
• Skips YAML frontmatter, fenced/indented code, headings, block quotes, table rows, lines containing links or explicit quotes, README files and hidden paths. Lines longer than 1800 characters and notes above 200,000 characters are not processed.
• Markdown filtering is conservative, not a full Markdown parser or a secret detector.
• Checks for edits made while the request was in progress before applying results.
• Open notes are changed using an undoable editor transaction. Undo with Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z.
• API/network errors leave note text unchanged. No guarantee of preserving meaning: review corrections and keep backups.
• Desktop only; Obsidian must remain open. External service availability and limits can change.

Development

main.js is the complete readable source and release artifact. No compilation or dependency installation is required. Run node --check main.js and node --test test.cjs with Node.js.

Automated tests cover the correction rules, Markdown filtering, consent, API errors, caching, editor transactions and concurrent editing using an Obsidian API mock. They do not substitute for a manual test in the actual Obsidian app. Desktop runtime validation is still pending for the initial release.
